My favourite film

Rafa

The first time I saw Silver River was at my friend’s house. It’s the story of two families, which didn’t sound very interesting to me, but actually I loved it. I saw it again last week, and I enjoyed it just as much. The actors are good and so is the story, but what I really love is the music – it’s brilliant. When the film first came out, not many people went to see it, but it’s a lot more popular now.

Dan

For me, Forest Path is the best film ever. It’s about a musician who leaves his home in Mexico and goes looking for adventure. He travels around the country for a year, playing his guitar everywhere he goes. At the end of the film, he meets the woman who becomes his wife. This actually happened in real life many years ago, which I didn’t know when I first saw it. The acting is very good, especially the woman – she has more acting experience than the man.

Claudio

I can’t remember when or where I first saw Black Hole, but it’s a film I like to watch at least once a year. It’s about travelling through space, and to me the acting and the story are not important – it’s the way it’s filmed. It’s like a dream and nothing seems real. At the time, this was a new way of making films and since then lots of people have copied the idea. The music is very beautiful, and the final moments always make me cry.

      Making friends at university

      Angus

My university has an internet group for new students, which I joined before I went. One person on there said that on her sister’s first day, she brought sweets from home to offer to everyone she met, as a way
to start a conversation. I thought that was a good idea, so I did the same. It worked, but in fact, the really good friends I have now are all people I met a few weeks later.

      Frank

I live at my university, and Mum and Dad drove me here on my first day. After they left, I felt terrible. I sat alone looking at photos of friends from home. But later, I went to a talk about all the university clubs, and I really enjoyed it. Clubs are a great way to meet people, and if you’re going to university, you should join some. They helped me a lot. Before I came to university, I was a quiet person, but these days I can talk to people more easily.

      Zac

I was away on holiday with my parents for the first week of my university course, so I missed all of the activities where people make friends. On that first morning, I couldn’t get online, so I went looking
for someone who knew what to do. The student I found got my wi-fi working and is now my best friend. I’ve also met lots of people because of him. Mum and Dad say I’ve grown up since I started university, but I’m not sure.

          A dancer's life

          Priya

I work as a dancer, and I'm also studying part-time. I practise most days and have to do my college work, so I can't always go out with my friends at weekends, but that's fine. We text each other every day. I mostly dance in musicals, but in the future I'm hoping to start jazz dance. My mum always comes to watch me on stage. She's my biggest fan! Being a dancer isn't easy, but I want to do it as long as I can.

          Zoe

There are dancers of all ages in my dance company and every year we go on international tours together. My cousin also dances with me. She's been a dancer for seven years and people everywhere know her now. She was a jazz dancer in the past, but loves what we do now. I don't usually feel worried before I dance in front of others - I know I'm good! But that's only because I try so hard. I spend about three hours dancing every day.

          Heike

I come from a family of dancers so maybe it's not surprising I'm one too. I'm in a hip-hop group at the moment, but actually I can dance to any music - even jazz! I'm the youngest member of my dance group. Before each show, I think of everything that might go wrong, but I try hard to tell myself it'll all be OK. We dance all over the country, so I'm away from home almost every day and I miss my friends a lot.

              Advice on doing homework

              Damian, 13

I don't mind doing homework, especially when I play some jazz (and not pop) on my phone. When I do, I'm able to think more carefully about what I'm doing. Sometimes I really enjoy doing my homework, especially when it's maths and I understand it well. Or when one of my classmates comes to my place and we study together. I find it's best if I let my parents and sister know I'm busy so they don't come into my room and spend all evening talking to me!

              Louis, 11

When I started doing my homework in my room every morning, it wasn't a great success. I always found something more interesting to do! But these days, I don't have the same problem. I just go to my room in the evening, switch on the light, sit down at my desk and do it. I do love music, but if I put my MP3 player on, I start to think about the song and not the homework! So I don't listen while I work. It's the same problem if my mum or dad put music on in the next room. I turn my mobile off or put it away before I start. That helps too.

              Jackson, 14

I usually do most of my homework before I go to bed. And then I do a bit more as soon as I wake up. I've always found it easy to do that. I'll maybe look at my German vocabulary for five minutes before breakfast. I tell my friends at school: 'If you want to do your homework well, make sure your room is nice and bright. Otherwise, you'll fall asleep!'

                  Three museums

                  Eureka!

Eureka! is a complete hands-on experience, which means that visitors can actually pick up any object in the museum. It's a great way for young visitors to learn about the world, the body, how things work and move. And when you buy an entry ticket, it allows you to come back as many times as you want for a whole year for no extra cost. As Eureka! is right next to Halifax train station, it's very easy to get to from all over the country.

                  Museum of Museums

Every time you visit the Museum of Museums, you'll be able to see something different. And that's because the things you see there are actually lent by other museums around the country. The museum always has lots of different vehicles, from ice-cream vans and old motorbikes to the different kinds of public transport people used to get to work many years ago. You can find out about all this and lots more.

                  Cinema Museum

Ronald Grant, who opened the Cinema Museum in the 1960s, travelled round the country and bought things from cinemas which were closing down. This included old film posters and wooden cinema seating. At the museum, you can now see these and much more, including the uniforms that cinema staff once had to wear.
Please let us know by phone or email if you'd like to come. We'll be happy to see you, but we need to arrange a guide, as it's only possible to visit the museum on an organised tour.

                      Learning for fun

                      Paula

Meet three women who enjoy taking classes in their free time.
I work full time as a nurse, and don't have much time for hobbies, but I've been interested in photography since I was a child. On my last holiday to India, I took lots of pictures, and everyone I showed them to said they were great. So I decided to do a course. At first, I was afraid I might not be good enough. After all, it was my first time as a student for ten years! But I loved it from the very first lesson.

                      Sally

When I was still at school, I started learning the violin. It was fun and I was quite good at it, but I didn't do it for long, because I had so many other hobbies. Then last year, I was having a hard time in my job, and my husband bought me a violin as a present. I started learning with a teacher again. All three of my children are learning to play instruments too, so now we can practise with each other!

                      Kim

Last year I moved to a new city because of my job. I didn't have anything to do in the evenings, so one of my colleagues said I should try a class at the local college. I immediately thought of cooking. My mum was a fantastic cook, and when I was a child I loved watching her in the kitchen, but I never learned how to cook myself. The other students on the course are around my age, and sometimes we go to restaurants together, or even the cinema.

How I became a tennis coach

                          Petra

I grew up in Germany, but when I was 17, I moved to Spain so I could go to a tennis centre there. It was hard to be without my family and friends, especially when I hurt myself or got ill. However, my tennis improved a lot. After three years, I left the centre and began my career. I started playing in big competitions around the world. I did OK, but wasn't earning enough money, so I quickly decided to become a tennis coach instead. I now teach children who are just starting the game, which is fun.

                          Bea

When I was 14, my dad sent me to a tennis centre near my home in Italy. He thought I might become a top player like him, but I saw how much time he spent going from one country to another during his career, and I've never wanted that for myself. My favourite things at the tennis centre were spending time at the pool or having barbecues with friends in the evenings. I'm now a coach, and teach young tennis stars at summer camps in Italy.

                          Sara

When I went to live in Spain so I could go to a famous tennis centre there, my dad came with me, and my mum stayed at home in Scotland. My tennis really improved during my two years there, but when I broke my foot it became clear that a career as a tennis player wasn't going to be possible. I went home for a year and then returned to the centre to do a coaching course. I now teach the best young players in Scotland.
